FEARS have been raised a huge housing estate could be built on green belt land in the centre of Brentwood.

Council leader Barry Aspinell has serious concerns the land, sandwiched between the A12 and Merrymeade House of almost 40 acres behind Brentwood Cricket Club, could be built on.

It comes after Essex County Council served a public notice to dispose of a disused track leading from Shenfield Road to Merrymeade Country Park – the only access point for vehicles to the park.

Mr Aspinell is angry County Hall never contacted Brentwood Council about the notice.

Mr Aspinell said the council would have put an offer in on the track if it was told of county’s intention to sell, but by making it public he feels they’re trying to start a bidding war.

He fears a developer could now buy the track, surrounding land and build a major development. He said: “We’re worried what kind of development could go there. 40 acres is a big space and could cater for a lot of houses. They’re being sneaky about the whole thing and it looks like they just want to up the price.”

A County Council spokesman said no plans to sell off land in the park. He added: “The public notice is a legal requirement as Secretary of State approval is required to dispose of green belt land.

“If approval to sell is obtained, Brentwood Council will be given first option to buy.”
