THE Brentwood Philharmonic Orchestra returned to its classical roots on at the weekend with a concert featuring classics by the likes of Beethoven and Brahms.

Ursuline Convent High School resonated to the thunderous tones of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Brahm's beloved Academic Festival. Soloist Beth Spendlove gave an evocative performance of Bruch's G minor violin concerto.

A large crowd including guest of honour and former Ursuline pupil Mayor of Brentwood Vicky Davies enjoyed the evening, which brought together amateur and professional players.

Charles Clark, orchestra leader and chairman, said: “It has been a real pleasure to bring a live performance of these wonderful works to Brentwood.”

The orchestra's next event is a second Concert of Film Music at Brentwood School's Wessex Auditorium on Saturday, February 14, which will be conducted by Brentwood's own film music composer, David Pickthall.
