FOODIES are asked to “look before you book” ahead of eating out this Christmas.

Brentwood Council and the Food Standards Agency have teamed up to remind people to check a restaurants food hygiene rating ahead of visiting.

The food hygiene rating tells people about hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. To check, go online at www.food.gov.uk/ratings or look for the green and black sticker in the window.

The ratings are determined by local authority food safety officers and run from zero to five, with a five rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene. 93 percent of food businesses within the borough are rated three or better so there are plenty of places with good standards.

Catherine Brown, chief executive of the Food Standards Agency, said: “This Christmas, do this one little thing for peace of mind when eating out. Take a moment to check the food hygiene rating, pick the right place, and enjoy a great meal out.”

Councillor Vicky Davies, vice chair of the housing and health committee, said: “Lots of people will now start planning their Christmas parties making it a busy time for local restaurants, takeaways, pubs and cafes.

“It's easier for people in Brentwood to check hygiene ratings online and choose a restaurant for their parties that takes food hygiene seriously, plus it's quick and easy to do and gives peace of mind before you book.

It's an important time for local businesses and a good food hygiene rating is something to be proud of. It also matters to customers, so we are encouraging all businesses in Brentwood to display their rating and have a good Christmas season."
