The young musician of the year surprised pupils with a impromptu performance in their final assembly of the year.
Martin Bartlett, 18, who was crowned BBC Young Musician of the Year in May, paid a visit to his old school, Brentwood Preparatory School, where he was a pupil until 2010, for a special, spontaneous concert.
He had scooped the title with a his performance of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kirill Karabits in the competition final at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh.
Staff and pupils were enthralled by Martin’s spontaneous performance and he received an enthusiastic welcome. Prep Headmaster Jason Whiskerd said it was a “thrill and an honour to have such a gifted pianist take time out of his busy schedule to make the children’s day.”
