TWO country parks could be linked as part of plans to build 6,000 homes.

Footpaths and bridleways could link Langdon Hills Country Park and Thorndon Country Park in Brentwood as part of plans to build a “garden suburb” between Basildon and Brentwood.

The two authorities have joined forces to investigate whether land between West Hordon and Laindon could be used for the garden suburb.

The proposals also include a railway station, affordable homes, traveller pitches and a community centre.

Basildon Council hopes the plans could ease pressure on the housing numbers needed for its local plan.

The plan will set out where 12,500 new homes will be built in the borough by 2031.

Councillor Dr Richard Moore, cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: “Following the decision to delay the local plan and bring all of the strands of polices and site allocations together into one consolidated document, we are now able to look at how we can better strengthen the conservation of the borough’s existing natural areas.

“Whilst it often becomes the focus of discussion, the local plan is not just about providing land for new homes and businesses.

“It is also about where can we best create outdoor facilities such as new country parks, woodlands or local parks.”

On December 4, Basildon Council’s cabinet agreed 4 to delay the Local Plan to put all elements into one document, including the 10,000 responses from residents.

A public consultation will run until Feburary 17.
