BRENTWOOD MP Eric Pickles is facing a backlash after calling for Muslim leaders to do more to fight extremism and prevent young people from being radicalised.

A letter sent to more than 1,000 Islamic leaders by the Communities Secretary has praised the way in which Muslims in Britain responded to the shocking Paris terror attacks, but added there was more "work to do.”

The letter, also signed by Communities Minister, Lord Ahmad, said: “You, as faith leaders, are in a unique position in our society.

“You have a precious opportunity, and an important responsibility, in explaining and demonstrating how faith in Islam can be part of British identity.

"We must show our young people, who may be targeted, that extremists have nothing to offer them.”

But Harun Khan, deputy secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said Mr Pickles must clarify his request, while former Chief Rabbi Lord Sack added he was sure the letter was “well-intentioned” but he could understand why Muslim communities had asked: ‘Why are you pointing the finger of blame at us?’”

But Prime Minister David Cameron defended the letter, saying it was “reasonable, sensible and moderate”.

In response to the criticism, Mr Pickles said: “The letter is a strong defence of Islam.

"Every day, mosques and other faith institutions provide help for those in need, and act as a centre for our communities.

“It’s these positive contributions that are the true messages of faith and it is these that need to be promoted.

"But we must also work together to tackle extremism wherever it is found, and leaders of all religions must play their part.”
