BASILDON and Brentwood councils are to begin running a joint benefits department.

A pilot scheme between the councils’ revenue and benefits sections, running for up to six years, has just been agreed.

It means housing and council tax benefits and the collection of council tax across both boroughs, will be carried out by the same staff in one office.

The decision has been made behind closed doors rather than going before the full council at Basildon.

A council report said it had been agreed to enter a partnering arrangement for an initial term of 12 months, with the option to extend for an additional year and a maximum of four more extensions.
