Brentwood Borough Council and Safer Brentwood have hosted another successful Senior Safety Road Show.

The event on Monday was held at Shenfield Parish Hall giving more than 130 members of the University of the Third Age Brentwood Branch (U3A) practical advice on how to stay safe.

They were given tips on various issues including crime prevention, scams, online fraud, rogue traders, doorstep sellers, home security, fire safety awareness, carbon monoxide poisoning, falls prevention and more.

They also received useful information from Essex Police, Brentwood Neighbourhood Watch, Home Instead, Safer Brentwood and more.

They were also given a goody bag with information from the day including purse bells and personal attack alarms and other items.

Councillor John Newberry, vice chair of the Safer Brentwood partnership, said: "Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home and not to live in fear of becoming a victim of crime.

"Our Senior Safety Road Shows are a great way to getting this message across and to give older and vulnerable residents some practical advice on how they can stay safe.

"We always have a large number of local organisations on hand to answer questions and everyone goes home with a free goody bag that has lots of useful information”.

Chairman of Brentwood U3A, Brian Leith, added: “We were keen to welcome the Senior Safety Road Show for our members, who were made aware of the risks and dangers that exist around us every day.

"Dangers in the home were highlighted, and there was a great deal of interest in a scheme, Keep Safe, being rolled out, that is aimed at providing security for people whilst shopping in Brentwood.

Over the past few years there has been much publicity highlighting dishonest practices and our members left the meeting feeling that the afternoon's presentations would make them less likely to become victims."
