Could you go a whole day without buying anything?

Essex County Council is challenging residents to take part in Buy Nothing Day as part of a whole host of events to celebrate the European Week of Waste Reduction (EWWR).

Buy Nothing Day invites waste-aware residents to attempt to go 24 hours without purchasing anything on Sunday, 29 November, in a bid to encourage them to upcycle and reuse items they already have around the home.

The day forms just one of a number of events across the county running from Saturday 21 – Sunday, 29 November covering everything from nappy advice to a repair café for broken bits and bobs.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Waste and Recycling, said: “The European Week for Waste Reduction is an initiative aimed at awareness-raising about sustainable resources and waste management.

"Through activities taking place across the county we will draw attention to products that can be repaired or upcycled, as well as draw attention to how residents can use their leftovers to help reduce food waste.”

From November 23 to 27 an information stand in the County Hall atrium will be packed all week with information on ‘waste reduction’ and how we can all do a bit more to reduce our waste.

There will be a dedicated day for electrical items on Wednesday 25 November and T-shirt up-cycling sessions on Friday 27 November.
