BISHOP of Chelmsford Stephen Cottrell appeared on a panel show discussing the war in Syria.
The question, should Britain join air strikes in Syria? Was asked as part of BBC program Sunday Morning Live.
The Rt Revd Cottrell appeared as part of a panel discussing the ongoing conflict in Syria. He urged caution with using air strikes and military intervention without having a proper plan in place to stop ISIS.
He said: "If the military intervention is simply to crush ISIS it will fail. It should be how do we defeat ISIS but how do we defeat what comes after ISIS.
"I concede military intervention will be part of a plan, but I cannot support air strikes until I see the plan.
"The air strikes will crush and degrade ISIS but history will repeat itself and something else will take its place."
He added that there were things to welcome as countries are now more prepared to sit down and talk to each other.
The panel also included bradcaster Iain Dale and columnist Owen Jones.
They also discussed the banning of an advert about the Lord's Prayer which was due to be shown before the new Star Wars film.
