A CHILD involved in a crash has been flown to hospital with "a very serious" head injury. 

The single vehicle crash, which involved a black Ford Fiesta, happened in St Mary's Lane, West Hornden, at about 9.15am this morning (Friday July 1).

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where the child and an adult were treated for their injuries.

An East of England Ambulance spokesman said: The child has been treated for a serious head injury and has been air lifted to The Royal London Hospital in a serious condition.

 "We sent a rapid response vehicle, two ambulance crews, an ambulance officer, and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.

"At the scene two patients were treated, an adult and a child.

"The child has been treated for a serious head injury and has been air lifted to The Royal London Hospital in a serious condition."

He added the adult's injuries are unknown but updates will follow. 

Meanwhile Essex Police has closed the road while investigations are underway. 

A spokesman said: "Police were called to a single vehicle road collision in St Mary's Lane, West Horndon, at just after 9.15am today.

"It involved a black Ford Fiesta.

"A child was injured and was taken to hospital.

"Their injuries are thought to be serious but not life-threatening.

"The road has been closed whilst investigations take place."
