ESSEX Police have issued a warning about scammers asking for money to fix computer problems.

The force has issued the warning after a woman from Clacton was called by someone purporting to be from Microsoft Windows at about 11.30am this morning.

The caller claimed the woman had a computer virus and would need to pay £150 to have it removed.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Fortunately the woman did not part with any money but was left very distressed.

"Police are urging anyone who receives such calls to hang up and report the incident direct to Action Fraud, the UK's national fraud-reporting centre run by the National Fraud Authority.

"You can either report fraud using its online system, which is available 24 hours a day at www.actionfraud.police.uk, or you can speak to an advisor by calling the reporting line on 0300 123 2040."
