SIX triples teams took part in the annual Richards Trophy competition at Brentwood Bowling Club on Sunday (August 21).

It was held in memory of former members George and Olive Richards, from Doddinghurst.

The couple’s daughters Janet Alderton and Celia Eade, and Celia’s husband Frank were guests at this year’s event at King George’s Playing Fields.

They presented the trophy to the winning team.

They were welcomed by club president Byron Davies at the presentation ceremony in the club pavilion where players and visitors enjoyed afternoon tea with home-made cakes.

Celia thanked officials for their invitation to spend the afternoon at the club and she outlined her family’s links going back to 1972 when her father joined. He died in 2011 shortly after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Her mother, who died in 2004 at the age of 90, thought “if you can’t beat them, join them”, and became one of the early members of the ladies’ section.

Celia’s husband Frank was also a member for several years from 1975 until work commitments prevented him continuing.

Teams in this year’s competition each played three games of six ends with 10 points for a win, five for a draw and points for ends won.

Celia congratulated winning skip Harry Egleton and team members Kath Jolly and Marion Lofts who scored 41 points, nine points clear of the runners-up Ron Lofts (skip), Kate Davies and Pam Baker.

In third place were Ron Jolly (skip), Margaret Rayment and Trevor Pedley with 20 points.

A video report of the day can be viewed on the club website brentwoodbowls.co.uk.

would-be lawn bowlers can also find details of free taster sessions on offer at the club.

Currently it has around 70 playing members who compete in several leagues.

Members regularly take part in a variety of outside competitions – individual, pairs, triples and rinks – and also support club competitions, friendly games against other clubs, and special events.
