Burglar slashes brave home owner

A BRAVE pensioner was slashed with a knife after fighting with a burglar in his home.

A 68-year-old man was shocked to discover the intruder in his bungalow in Hunters Chase, Hutton, when he went indoors last Wednesday lunchtime.

The man had been working on his car outside and had popped into the house for a drink when he discovered the intruder.

A fight ensued between the two men, during which the burglar slashed the pensioner’s hand with a knife.

The attacker then ran off, taking with him a small sum of cash.

Police carried out a search of the surrounding area, using armed police, dog handlers, officers from the Air Support Unit and road policing officers, but to no avail.

The 68-year-old was treated by paramedics at the scene and was able to give a good description of the burglar, who he said was white, in his early 30s, of medium build, and approximately 5 ft 11 ins tall.

He had dark brown, straight hair with an unusual fringe covering his forehead and right eye.

Police said he would have sustained facial injuries as a result of his scrap with the homeowner. At the time of the attack he was wearing a dark jacket and dark cargo-style trousers.

Investigating Officer, Det Insp Simon Werrett, said: “We need to arrest the burglar, who went to extremes just to steal a few pound notes. We’re keen to speak with any motorists who were using the A129 London- Rayleigh Road just before and during the lunchtime period and who saw a man fitting the description to contact us.

“Given this and the fairly distinctive description, somebody must know who he his. We need to get him.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at Brentwood police station on 0300 3334444.
