Late night opening hope for town

LATE-night shopping in Brentwood town centre could be introduced to help retailers beat the recession.

Brentwood Council is asking traders for feedback on the scheme, which would be advertised in the council’s quarterly magazine and on its website.

As part of its Keep Trade Local Campaign, the council is also seeking views on a town-wide loyalty card scheme, which would give residents concessions on their shopping.

Traders are being asked to form a focus group to advise on the plans, and further details of the scheme will be announced at the end of this month after the consultation period.

Christine Carr, the owner of the Matchmaker bridal shop, in Kings Road, backed the proposals.

She said: “I think a late-night shopping day would encourage more people to come into town.

“I struggle to get to where I need to go after work, so I am sure there are many others who would appreciate later opening hours.”

But Sheena Crawford, the manager of the Bon Marche clothes store in the Baytree Centre, said the town would not benefit.

She said: “Brentwood is not a mecca for shopping and my customers tell me if they want late-night shopping they go to Romford or Lakeside.”

Council leader Cllr Louise McKinlay said: “We need broad support from local retailers and business groups to ensure the scheme’s success.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to complete their survey so we have workable schemes of benefit to businesses and shoppers alike.”
