ACOUSTIC songbird Emy-Lee Brooke gets a shot at the big time when she opens for two prestigious female artists in London tonight.

The 20-year-old from Basildon, whose vocals have been compared to Alanis Morissette and Bjork, lends her support to Amy Studt and Basia Bulat, at Underbelly, in Hoxton.

Taking inspiration from Damien Rice, Emy-Lee prides herself on simple, stripped-back acoustic music with soulful vocals.

She studied performance arts at Palmer’s College, in Grays, and teaches singing at Youth Creation, in Stanford-le-Hope.

Tonight’s headline acts have already made their mark in the music world. Singer Studt notched up two Top Ten singles in 2003, and is planning to release new material, while Canadian pop artist Basia Bulat was shortlisted for 2008’s Polaris Music Prize.

“I have always been a bit of a cheeky, rebellious kid, but then when I’m on stage I become someone else – that’s the beauty of music though I guess,” says Emy-Lee.

For those who can’t make the gig, the singer will also be performing at the Bull Inn, in London Road, Pitsea, on Saturday, at 8pm.

Emy-Lees’s debut album Almost 2 Years will be available to download online from March.
