RECORD-breaking Brentwood School runner Nicole McKechnie scooped gold in the county championships and smashed the Essex Inter Girls’ 300metre record.

Sixteen-year-old Nicole took top honours in the event at the Essex Schools’ Athletics Championships. She will now go on to represent Essex in the National Schools’ Athletics Championships being held next month in Birmingham.

An impressive 22 athletes from Brentwood School competed for Mid-Essex in last Saturday’s championships. It was a hugely successful day for both Mid-Essex and the school.

Other Brentwood School medal winners were Max Fewster, Bronze Medal in Year 7 Boys’ 800m; Elliot Corderoy, Silver Medal in Year 7 Boys’ 800m; Charlotte Walters, Silver Medal in Junior Girls’ Discus; James Warman; Silver Medal in Junior Boys’ Discus, and Emily Shaw, Gold Medal in Junior Girls’ Javelin.

Other school successes were: Naomi Kphogo, sixth in the Inter Girls’ Shot (also competing against fifth years); Connie Bell, fifth in Year 7 Girls’ Shot; Lewis Arthur, fifth in Year 7 Boys’ High Jump; Ella Lindsay, fourth in the Junior Girls’ 200m and Georgia Macalle, fourth in the Inter Girls’ 80m Hurdles (she was beaten to third place in a photo finish with a fifth-year student.) Max Lambert, competing for the first time in the Inter Boys’ 400m Hurdles, ran home fifth also against fifth-year opposition.

Headmaster Ian Davies said it had been a fantastic sporting year for Brentwood pupils.
