Blues start with defeat

MALDON & TIPTREE 3 BRENTWOOD TOWN 1
TWO goals in the last 15 minutes saw Brentwood beaten in their opening league fixture at Maldon.
It could have been different if Brentwood, who dominated the early stages, had taken some of the chances that came their way.
It was a new-look Brentwood side that contained only one of last season’s squad, Martyn Stokes.
However, there was a welcome return to the club for right back James Love who lined up alongside two other returning defenders, Gbenga Sonuga and Charlie Rolls, in a back four that was completed by Stokes.
Brentwood should have taken a lead less than a minute after the kick-off but Anthony Ryan could not convert a great chance in front of goal.
And in the sixth minute a good run and cross by Sipho Mtyando on the right found Jake Cass who was denied by a double save from Maldon goalkeeper Richard Wray.
The visitors took a deserved 17th minute lead when, from a Love freekick down the middle, Stokes calmly gathered the ball and took it round Wray for a simple finish.
This stung Maldon into raising their game and within three minutes they had equalised with a fine goal when Ben Bradbury linked up well with Leon McKenzie and slotted past Brentwood keeper Rhys Madden.
The second half saw Maldon gradually increase the pressure on the Brentwood defence and in the 76th minute, McKenzie shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Three minutes later Joe Gardner shot home for Maldon’s third and there was no way back for Brentwood.
Brentwood Town: Madden, Love, Rolls, Sonuga, Stokes, Coker, Mtyanda, Bradley (Adebayo 46), Ryan, Cass, Carvell (Bantick 64). Unused subs: Pitman, Simmons, Gardner.
