BRENTWOOD 4 WAPPING 2

(Mens Division 2 South)

HOCKEY: The home side knew this was going to be one of their tougher games this season and they weren’t wrong.

With Wapping taking an early lead from a underserved short corner the Brentwood side had a fight on their hands for the next 70 minutes.

Half way through the first half a great ball from the back and a swift touch through to the D and the ball found its way on to the end of cashel Gleesons stick who wasted no time in hammering the ball cleanly into the back of the net.

With the play going back and forth the whole length of the pitch, Wapping again scored just before the half time whistle.

Some fantastic skill through the mid field and forward line got the ball to the team's youngest player Alex Haynes who sold his defender a great dummy, with his back to goal, stepped inside the top left of the D and with a great strike beat the goalie on his far side post to bring the game all square.

Shortly after, a Wapping player was given a yellow card and sent to the sin bin.

Brentwood made good use of this and after a barrage of attacks from the forward line, the umpire blew for a short corner after a foul in the D.

Again another perfect routine straight out of the training ground saw the slip ball to Paul Haynes at the far post to confidently touch the ball in for Brentwood to take the lead.

With the Wapping player still off and the away side losing their momentum, Brentwood kept the pressure on.

Then a shot rebounded off a Wapping player on the goal line resulting in a penalty flick and Ian Forbes netted his third flick of the season.

The final whistle blew and with that 4-2 win it saw Brentwood take top of the table.

* Bev Simmons scored in the second half to give Brentwood Ladies a 1-0 win over Thurrock Ladies.
