U's boss thoughtful on eve of big game

THE U’s Matt Heath is ready to answer Paul Lambert’s derby call of duty for Colchester United.

The six foot four inch centre-half has found himself out of favour at the U’s and has not started for them since November.

But Paul Reid’s suspension has left Colchester boss Lambert searching for a new defensive partner for Pat Baldwin, ahead of their big clash with Southend United tomorrow.

And Heath is eager to step into the breach and take his place in the heart of Colchester’s defence, for this weekend’s Essex derby.

Heath said: “I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t thinking about playing against Southend.

“It’ll be a great atmosphere tomorrow and a great game to play in.

“I’ve not played many games recently and I’ve got bundles of energy.

“The manager’s decision is final but I’m looking forward to being in his plans for tomorrow — we’ll have to wait and see.”

Heath, 27, admitted it has been difficult not playing for the U’s over recent weeks.

The former Leeds United defender has been restricted to just one league start under boss Lambert.

“I’m desperate to play and no-one likes not playing,” said Heath.

The player came on as a first-half substitute for the injured Chris Coyne during the U’s 3-3 draw at Southend last November.
