PREMIER DIVISION A 10 - 0 win for Hutton "A" over Billericay Sports "B" keeps them well in the running for the top of the table - Peter Saunders, Django Fung and Keith Phillips were far too strong for Keith Ashton, Mike Johnston and Debbie Auvache - only two of the games reaching a fifth end Auvache against Saunders and Ashton against Phillips. Hutton "A" followed up with an away match at Billericay "B" and were held to a 5 - 5 draw thanks to battling performances from Terry Timms and Paul Mulley with two wins apiece and a win for Mark Martin - for Hutton Django Fung won twice (Timms denying him his maximum) and Keith Phillips also won twice (being denied by Mulley in five) while Ken James lost all three in five - against Martin he dropped a two end lead to lose 10/12 in the fifth, against Mulley he also held a slender lead at 2 - 1 but again lost the fifth end 9/11 and likewise against Timms another long five end losing battle. All three of Phillips encounters also went to five ends in a 5 - 5 draw that probably ranks as the closest match of the season. Doubles to the visitors ensured a creditable draw for both teams. Buttsbury "A" also claimed a heavy victory 9 - 1 away to Mountnessing "A" - John Holland and Reagan Nettleingham were unbeaten with Ev Lucas being denied his maximum by Hamish Innes - Lucas also needing five ends to defeat Dave Finlayson - Mark Allaway was Mountnessing's third player and scoreless. Bottom club Selex "C" are still searching for their first win of the season - their home match against Billericay "C" saw them go down 1 - 9 to John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter - for Selex Trevor Ward denied Dave Carter his maximum for the home side's only point with Chris Aukett and Kevin Smart unable to post any wins. A 6 - 4 away win for Brentwood "B" at Selex "B" saw Paul Cuming in good form and contributing a maximum to Brentwood's score - he needed five ends to defeat both Gary Ward (1 win) and Kevin Worthington (2 wins) - Trevor Carter adding two points to the total with defeats over Dave Calleja and a cracking game with Ward which Carter took in the fifth 3/11, 16/14, 11/3, 9/11, 15/13 - Philip Purser lost all three but ran Ward close in five ends and Calleja in four. Selex "B" then travelled to Billericay Sports "A" where the match finished all square at 5 - 5 - Ray Eldridge winning twice and Marilyn Bawden and Keith Ashton picking up one each - Kevin Worthington lost his first singles to Ashton in five but won his other two - Gary Ward lost to Eldridge in five but won his other two and finally Keith Spicer losing to Bawden in five and Eldridge but defeating Ashton in five despite losing the first two ends. The doubles went to the home side for a fair result in an entertaining match. Another top four team Herongate posted a 9 - 1 away win over Billericay "C" with Peter Brownlow scoring the home side’s only point.
FIRST DIVISION St. Joseph's seem assured of promotion as their latest two results indicate - away at Buttsbury "C" they recorded a 9 - 1 win at the expense of David Ramsey and Caroline Cole - Buttsbury's only point coming via Ramsey - with only two players Buttsbury have again lost valuable ground in the Division. St. Joseph's then collected a 7 - 3 home win over Billericay Sports "C" and had Sue Hickman and Nicola Parks unbeaten and Lindsay Phelps winning once - Dave Kirston won the first end against Parks but fell in four then took the first two ends against Hickman but was unable to hang on. Linda Attridge held a 2 - 1 lead over Parks and 10/8 in the fourth but her opponent came in with two excellent forehands to level at deuce and then went on to collect the next two points and the fifth end. Pat White likewise held a 2 - 1 lead over Parks but he like Attridge was unable to cross the finishing line. A rare appearance for Brian Cook in which he recorded an excellent maximum ensured Writtle "A" picked up a 6 - 4 home win over Mountnessing "B" - Ian Hockley collected a win in five over Chris Crooks (1 win) with Frank Neill defeating Jon Dyson (1 win) also in five - Mick Morris posting two wins for the visitors - Writtle took the doubles in three to ensure victory.
SECOND DIVISION Hutton "C" did their hopes of finishing in second place no harm at all with two excellent victories - at home against Brentwood Hard "B" they won 6 - 4 with Richard Hayhoe unbeaten and Mike Newman winning twice - his defeat coming at the hands of Nick Wright (2 wins) - Joan Cook made a determined effort to put points on the board for Hutton but to no avail and the match was duly won with a doubles win for Hayhoe and Newman over John Barns and Wright in five with the visiting pair storming into a two end lead but going down 10/12 in the fifth end. Brentwood Hard "B" look a good bet to finish in the runners up spot. Hutton "C" then introduced Wally Sale into the team in place of Joan Cook in their away match at Buttsbury "F" and picked up an 8 - 2 win with Richard Hayhoe and Mike Newman again among the points and both unbeaten - Sale assisted with a win over Frances Hutt but found his other two opponents Davey Crook and George Gaze a shade more of a handful and lost to both albeit in five to Crook. Brentwood "C" collected their ninth win of the season with a score of 7 - 3 when they defeated club colleagues Brentwood "D" - Chris Hills was unbeaten - winning in five against Mike Hooks and Jon White (2 wins) and in three against Graham Mann (1 win) - White defeated Richard Denton and Graham Harris with Mann getting the better of Denton - probably another long evening at Tipps Cross with only two games being completed in three ends - Brentwood "D" hover above the wooden spoon spot in the League having played a game more than Buttsbury "F" who are bottom.
