Brentwood 0 Ware 1

AN early goal from Bradley Poole was enough to earn three valuable points for Ware and bring to an end Brentwood’s eight-game Ryman League unbeaten run on Saturday at the Brentwood Arena.

Brentwood had made one enforced change from the side that beat Leyton last week, as Ross Parmenter came in for the suspended Reiss Noel. Ware began the game in the relegation zone, but were coming off the back of a great win over promotion chasing Great Wakering.

On a chilly afternoon, it was Brentwood who were caught cold as an innocuous free kick into the area in the second minute squirmed through their defence to an unmarked Poole, who slotted it past Jim Hasell. Ware continued to dominate throughout the opening exchanges, and threatened to overrun Brentwood for a brief period. Both Luke Marshall and Ryan Wade had shots deflected just wide, but Ware couldn’t manage to test Hasell from either corner.

Once again, Brentwood came into the half more and more as the half progressed, but could not turn possession into meaningful chances. Many of their attacks broke down in the final third, and it wasn’t until the 26th minute when they managed their first shot on goal as Darren Blewitt headed over from a Donovan Wilson cross. The game was being disrupted by numerous petty fouls from both sides, which meant neither team were able to get a hold on the game.

Towards the end of the half Brentwood finally managed to open up a couple of chances for their strikers, but they were unable to capitalise. First Ian Luck fired straight at the excellent Ricky Wiseman in the 39th minute, then Joe Sweeney saw his looping header expertly tipped over the bar as the half came to a close.

The beginning of the second half epitomised the match, as two lengthy injury stoppages and an early booking for Wilson meant Brentwood were unable to get any momentum going.

Ware were excellent defensively, and seemed quite content to soak up the Brentwood attacks while occasionally hitting them on the break. Neither side were able to carve out any chances until the 69th minute, when Wiseman had to spread himself to block Sweeney who had finally managed to get in behind the seemingly impenetrable Ware centre backs. Minutes later, another Sweeney attempt was pushed wide by a diving Wiseman. At the other end, Brentwood also had their defence in order, which meant that Hasell and Wiseman were both bystanders for much of the half. The pacy Thomas Mustapha fired a shot well wide for Ware, but the match was beginning to meander towards an inevitable conclusion. Pennant and Blewitt both had opportunities from crosses, but neither were able to test the keeper.

As Brentwood began to get frustrated, tempers flared and numerous off the ball scuffles broke out in injury time. In the first of these, Wilson and Wade clashed which led to Wilson’s dismissal for a second bookable offence. As things turned ugly, both Wade and Brentwood substitute Petrit Elbi were also booked. In the end, after almost eight minutes of injury time, referee Wade Norcott finally called time on what was a dour encounter.

Brentwood Town: Hasell, Wilson, Glozier, Blewitt, Good, Parmenter (Elbi 70), Okojie, Pennant, Sweeney, Luck (Lay 65), Priest. Unused subs: Henty, Fletcher, Pyne.

Brentwood’s next Ryman League Division One North fixture is away to Enfield Town on Saturday, December 19, kick-off 3pm.
