Great Wakering 4 Brentwood 3

BRENTWOOD found themselves losing 4-0 by the 69th minute of this Ryman League fixture at Burroughs Park, but a spirited fightback in the last ten minutes at least saw them score three times to make the final score much closer.

Brentwood made an unsteady start to the first half and when a Danny Glozier clearance in the fourth minute was blocked, Rovers' Dan Trenkel got his head to the ball before keeper James Hassell, but Darren Blewitt was on hand to clear in the six yard box.

However, Brentwood were soon a goal down when the prolific Neil Richmond hit a terrific shot from outside the area that went in off the underside of the bar for the striker’s 16th goal of the season.

Brentwood gradually worked their way into the game and the lively Gary Bowes produced a good cross in the 16th minute that Kris Lee headed just over the bar.

Richmond was unlucky not to get a second goal in the 21st minute when, after a quickly taken free kick, his 20-yard shot hit the top of a post with Hassell beaten.

Lee then shot just wide of the post at the other end and as the first half progressed the visitors began to get on top and Bowes and Lee both went close to an equaliser just before the break.

Brentwood also started the second half well with Dee Okojie forcing home keeper Louis Godwin-Green to tip away a goal bound effort in the opening seconds.

But in the 48th minute a good move opened up the Brentwood defence and Adam Holmes produced a fine finish to put his side 2-0 ahead.

Brentwood brought on Piers Wixon and Ross Parmenter in an effort to get back into the game. Bowes nearly reduced the arrears when he beat three men on the left, but could not force the ball past Godwin-Green at the near post.

Hassell then made two good saves in quick succession from Richmond and Jimmy Webb, but it was a short reprieve as Hassell was beaten in the 65th minute by Webb’s shot from the left which found its way into the far top corner of the net.

Four minutes later Webb was left in space and easily converted Danny Pitts’ long ball into the box.

Brentwood must have wondered how they were four goals down in what had been a fairly even contest.

Richard Priest replaced Okojie and could have scored with his first touch as he got on the end of a Lee cross.

It could have been worse for Brentwood had Richmond converted a 78th minute chance when Trenkel put him through.

But Brentwood kept going and Lee set up a chance for centre back Blewitt to make it 4-1 with his third goal of the season.

Parmenter scored with the aid of a deflection in the 86th minute and almost immediately afterwards Priest’s excellent run into the box set up a simple tap-in for Lee.

But Brentwood could not complete an unlikely comeback and it was Wakering who went closest to scoring before the end when Hassell kept out another effort from Richmond.

Brentwood Town: Hassell, Love, Glozier, Good, Blewitt, Pennant (Parmenter 55), Okojie (Priest 69), Mason, Lee, Savage (Wixon 55), Bowes. Unused subs: Henty, Fletcher.
