Ilford 1 Brentwood 1

BRENTWOOD'S search for some much-needed league points continued at Cricklefield last Wednesday where they had to settle for a draw after both defences held firm in the second half.

Manager Les Whitton made a number of changes from the team that lost narrowly at Great Wakering on Saturday.

With Danny Glozier having moved on to Ryman North rivals Concord Rangers, Nathan Fletcher came into the defence, and Gary Henty, Ross Parmenter, Richard Priest and Piers Wixon all started in midfield.

Both sides had half chances in the opening twenty minutes with the best opportunity falling to Brentwood’s Gary Bowes.

Wixon’s excellent pass put Bowes through on the left side of the penalty area, but Foxes keeper Pape Diagne came out make a good save.

Ilford then took a 23rd minute lead with a sensational strike from Victor Omogbehin, who swivelled and hit an unstoppable left foot shot into the top corner.

The lead was short-lived as Brentwood equalised in the 28th minute.

Kris Lee and James Love worked a move on the right and Henty’s cross was met by Bowes with an excellent first touch before tucking the ball into the corner for his first goal for Brentwood.

Bowes’ pace was often a threat to the home defence and he went close to putting his team ahead two minutes before half time, but Diagne saved at this near post.

Both teams had chances in the second half and Brentwood were frustrated that they could not find the goal scoring touch that would have improved their league position.

Bowes brought down a Darren Blewitt cross in the 67th minute, but his shot was blocked and deflected over the bar.

Wixon volleyed wide from a pinpoint pass by Love and when Love burst into the home penalty area his effort was deflected wide for a corner.

Brentwood’s two subs nearly conjured a winner in the second minute of stoppage time, when Dee Okojie beat two defenders and found Petrit Elbi, but once again the Ilford defence was quick to shut down and Elbi’s effort went over the bar for another corner.
