School storms to national competition win

SHENFIELD High School’s Year 9 mixed rounders squad attended the National finals in Corby.

There were three groups of four teams and the winners of each group progressed through to the semi-finals, along with the highest scoring loser.

Shenfield played three group games and remained unbeaten, meaning they finished as group winners, securing a place in the semi-final.

The rain was beginning to get heavier, but the students were un-phased and kept their focus on the rounders.

Shenfield fielded first in the semi-final and with some excellent skills from Sam Wood, Mady Villers and Anna Wood, they managed to restrict their score to three rounders off 18 good balls and got eight opposing players out.

Shenfield went up to bat, knowing they needed to score three-and-a-half to progress to the final.

They started the batting so strongly, the game was stopped as they had won with seven balls left to be bowled.

Fate had a part to play in the final as they met Honywood School, who they had played previously at the regional competition.

Once again, Shenfield fielded first. This was a fantastic display of rounders and the team worked incredibly well together.

With some outstanding fielding from the whole team, they managed to limit them to a one-and-a-half rounder total score from 18 good balls.

They were up to bat next and only needed a score of two from the whole game.

Marc Carter was leading batsmen and scored a half. Tom Cassinos was up next and managed to perform a reverse hit, scoring one rounder. Tom Mann was third batsmen.

Tom connected with the ball and made it to third base. The umpire stopped the game and declared Shenfield national champions.

The whole team played well, but Mady Villiers was selected to attend England rounders trials, which was an amazing achievement.
