Leopards swoop for Hernandez
3:03pm Wednesday 29th August 2012 in Sport
ESSEX Leopards have made Greg Hernandez their first signing of the summer.
The American forward enjoyed a stunning season with Division Two side Glamorgan Gladiators last year.
And Leopards chairman Fred Dicker is delighted to have brought the 24-year-old to the club.
“We’re really pleased to have signed Greg,” said Dicker.
“He had a fantastic season in Division Two and we have no doubt that he is ready to make the step up to Division One and hopefully the BBL in 2013.”
Hernandez finished last season with an incredible average of 35.33 points per game and 16.92 rebounds.
That fine form attracted a number of sides, but he eventually opted to join Leopards, who will again be splitting their matches between Basildon and Brentwood this season. And Hernandez is keen to make a good impression. “I am very excited about joining the Leopards this season,” said Hernandez, who stands at 6ft 8ins tall.
“I’m looking forward to next season in Essex as I hope to help continue the great success of the club.”
Hernandez played NCAA Division Three basketball while at college in America, averaging around 20 points and 10 rebounds at Maryville College in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Leopards are now set to complete more signings in the new few days before their season starts at home to Brixton Topcats at the Brentwood Centre on Friday, September 28.
Two days after that, Leopards host Medway Park Crusaders at the Basildon Sporting Village.
