Cups start table tennis season

THE 65th season of the Brentwood & District Table Tennis League began its six month duration with the three Divisional Knock Out Cups featuring in the first week.

The First Division saw two preliminary round matches – Brentwood B team of Bob Garson, Brian Steward and Mary Nicholls moving smoothly into the First Round proper with a comfortable 5-1 home win over a Mountnessing B team of Jon Dyson, John Newman and Joan Donovan – Steward losing to Donovan in five ends.

The second match in this Division saw Billericay D record an impressive 5-2 away win at Billericay Sports D thanks to Gareth Davies, Jon Fieldsend and Alan Wood.

Five of the ties went to five ends but the home side could only muster two wins in these – the first doubles for John Darling and Brian Cole and a singles win for Darling over Wood – the victors could reasonably expect to feature in the final.

The two preliminary matches in the Second Division were easily won by the away teams with Buttsbury B of Alan Tofts, Frances Hutt and Peter James claiming an early finish over their opponents Steve Murdoch, Norman Feakins and Tony Adams – a 5-0 win for Buttsbury B.

Brentwood Hard were also winners - 5-1 but over the two player home team of Mountnessing C – Greg Cooper, John Barns and Peter Childs lost only one singles – Claire Abraham defeating Barns and newcomer Paul Franklin unable to score.

Premier Division - In league matches – champions for the past four years Selex A started off in great style with a 10-0 home win over Writtle A – Paul Stephens, Chris Knight and Paul Sayer defeating Matthew Brown, Hector Rogers and Dave Moles – the first two ties going to five ends but Selex continued their unbeaten run from last season and look likely to hold on to their title for another season despite only having played one game.

Possible challengers and new to the league Kingswood A also started with a victory but dropping two points in the process against Billericay B.

For the home side Carl Johnson was unbeaten with Steve Buer and Chris Buer picking up two wins each – their losses coming at the hands of John Webber – Paul Mulley and Ray Eldridge being the visitors other two players.

Brentwood A hammered newly promoted Selex B at home – winning 9-1 against Kevin Smart, Garry Hartgrove and Colin Clements.
