THE Alan Paul Memorial Squash Handicap has been restaged, raising further funds for Cancer Research.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, a dozen squash fans replayed the all-day handicap tournament in memory of Alan Paul, formerly of London Road, Brentwood.

Based at LA Fitness in Chindits Lane, in Warley, the event was again won by Paul Cousins, of Herts – the club’s top player – who beat Havering’s Joe Smith by 2-0.

Paul demonstrated the fitness, skill and concentration required to win with the highest handicap. Paul started on a score of minus 20 in each game but worked his way through four long matches to face Joe Smith (minus six handicap) in the final.

The semi-finalists were Paul Kirby, of Brentwood, and Jonathan Jordan, of Ingatestone. Players’ entry fees and a raffle netted £125 for Cancer Research, with an application in for matched funding from Royal Mail.

Organisers Barbara Sanderson, of Harold Wood, and Oliver Rowe, of Brentwood, said: “We welcomed back many players and their supporters who helped get the tournament off the ground last year.

“Congratulations to Paul Cousins for retaining the title and to all who contributed towards our Cancer Research donation.”

Alan’s daughter Petra Wagner, who lives in Brentwood, presented the trophy to Paul at the club where her father played until his death in 2011 aged 75.
