ALEX Akrofi scored a 94th minute winner at Great Wakering Rovers to help Brentwood Town to their first victory of the Ryman North season.

Akrofi put Brentwood in front early in the second half, only for Great Wakering to equalise in 87th minute.

Rovers piled on the pressure in search of a winner but it was the Blues who left Burroughs Park with maximum points thanks to Akrofi's excellent counter-attacking goal deep into stoppage time.

Like Brentwood, Great Wakering lost their opening match and were keen to get points on the board.

They started brightly and almost gained an early lead but Town 'keeper Ollie Bowles produced a fine save to deny Jay Nash's glancing fifth minute header.

Rovers went closer still as the half came to a close and were unlucky not to go ahead.

Billy Radley got in behind the Blues defence and jinked his way past Bowles but the acute angle got the better of him and he hit the crossbar.

Brentwood created little in attack in the first half but they were threatening after the interval and it took them just 11 minutes to break the deadlock.

Sam Cross provided the assist with an excellent ball into Akrofi 10 yards out and the frontman slotted the ball past goalkeeper Adam Seal at the second attempt to put the away side ahead.

Rovers increased the tempo after going behind and Billy Johnson was inches away from leveling the score but they were denied by the crossbar yet again.

With Wakering piling on the pressure they were left vulnerable to the counter attack and Akrofi had the opportunity to make them pay, beating two defenders to make his way into the box, but he dragged his shot harmlessly wide.

And the Blues were left to rue the missed effort as Great Wakering leveled the score in the 87th minute courtesy of a fine individual effort from Radley.

The number seven came in off the right win and his powerful 18-yard strike was enough to beat Bowles at his near-post.

If anyone was to go on and win the match Great Wakering looked like the team to do it, but Akrofi shocked the Rovers crowd with virtually the last kick of the match.

The frontman waited for his chance on the halfway line and took an expert touch to pick up a long ball forward and he charged past the last defender before beating Seal from just inside the box.

All of the Brentwood team ran to celebrate with the match-winner and joint-manager Adam Flanagan believes this could be a breakthrough season for Akrofi.

"He is really young, has got really good pace and he knows how to hold people up.

"Probably the one aspect of his game he has to work on is his finishing, but forwards breed on confidence and he has scored two tonight and hopefully now his confidence will come."

Brentwood will be looking to secure successive away wins when they travel to Cricklefields to play Barkingside on Saturday.

Brentwood: Bowles, Dobbs, Baucutt, Stokes, Alaile (C), Dafter (Hall 73'), Robson, Webb, White (Stanley 73'), Akrofi, Cross.

Unused subs: Ngandu, Rees, Mbulu.
