IN the first Division Brentwood “B” pulled off a 6 – 4 home win over Buttsbury “B” thanks to a team effort from Bob Garson, Brian Steward and Colin Griffiths.
The trio all collected two wins – Griffiths denying George Pavitt his maximum but losing to Sue Body while Steward and Garson were both defeated by Pavitt. The match had only one game completed in three ends while five were taken to five ends. Writtle “A” completed a 7 – 3 home win over Buttsbury “D” with both Dave Moles and Frank Neill unbeaten and Martin Goddard winning once.
St. Joseph’s amassed 14 points from their last two matches – the first a home fixture against Buttsbury “C”.
The next match for St. Joseph’s was an away fixture at Billericay Sports “C” which the home side won 6 – 4.
St. Joseph’s got off to a good start with Gary Carr defeating Pat White in five ends but Alf Fox remained undefeated. Both Hickman and Carr gained wins over White and Brian Warren for St. Joseph’s four points but the home pairing of White/Warren won the doubles which took the home side to victory. In the second Division 15 points was the haul of the Division’s top team Billericay “D” from their latest two matches – the first away at Hutton “B”. Billericay’s next match was an 8 – 2 home win over Brentwood Hard “B”.
Keith Cullen was undefeated with both Alan Wood and Jon Fieldsend picking up two points each. Hutton “D” seem determined to pass the wooden spoon to another team this season and they picked up their third win of the season in a 7 – 3 home win over Buttsbury “E”. Steve Murdoch was the home side’s best player. A 5 - 5 looked a fair result when Mountnessing “C” entertained Hutton “D”. Joan Donovan had three comfortable wins over Steve Murdoch, Tony Adams and Joe Bee. Brentwood Hard “A” picked up 10 points when Hutton “B” conceded their match. Premier Division action saw Buttsbury collected a 9 – 1 home win over Mountnessing “A” thanks to maximums from Reagan Nettleingham and John Holland.
With another four teams within touching distance at the top, Selex “A” came a little closer with 5 – 5 draw at home to a two man Herongate team of Dave Bassett and Graham Arthurton.
Paul Stephens, Jon Stokes and Alison Gower were gifted three points and then found Bassett unbeatable – his three wins included an 11/9 fifth end against Stephens and an 11/8 fifth end against Stokes and four ends against Gower — Arthurton gained one win over Gower but the Herongate pairing then took the fifth point with a win in the doubles. The following week Billericay “A” entertained the Selex “A” side of Chris Knight, Jon Stokes and Alison Gower and found the visitors almost unbeatable — the home side losing 1 — 9. Selex “B” were also in action at home to Billericay Sports “A” and picked up an 8-2 home win which keeps them close to the top of the table.
