Essex Womens County Cup:
Hutton Ladies 3 C&K Basildon 2

Hutton progressed to the quarter finals of the Essex Women’s County Cup with a victory over a team a division above.

The scoreline somewhat flattered the visitors, as Hutton commanded the game with the Basildon keeper called into action time and again.

However, Hutton had to come from behind. After 16 minutes, Hutton received a free kick left of the area. Keeper Helen Richardson took it, only for it to find an unmarked opposing player who took one touch before scoring from 40 yards.

Hutton pushed on with more determination and, camped in the Basildon half, they forced several corners. Rachael Agombar played one of these to the corner of the box where it was might with a thunderous strike from Emily Young, leaving the keeper helpless.

Several more chances were scrambled away by the rattled Basildon back four, who didn’t know whether to mark the hardworking lone striker Katy Judd or two tricky wingers Amy Simmons and Jo Johnson.

A great move started with pressure by Nicole Farmer and Sam Jones allowed Agombar to pick up the loose ball and swing a pass out to Simmons on the wing. The resulting cross was expertly directed in by Johnson at the back post to put Hutton firmly in control.

C&K created chances after the break but still the Hutton defence kept them to shots from distance. Pressure forced yet another corner which this time was turned in from a great header by Judd.

With 15 left, C&K rallied and scored the goal of the game when a half volley flew into the top corner. Hutton had their backs against the wall for the last ten minutes but defended resolutely and held on to move into the next round — the furthest the club has ever gone. Man of the match was Jo Johnson.
