Brentwood hockey firsts happy with a draw against Cambridge

NE14 HOCKEY East Division 1:
Brentwood 1sts 2 Cambridge City 2nds 2

This week Brentwood men’s first team drew 2-2 in a thrilling away battle. The good, tactical play went end-to-end with all goals well-finished and deserved.

Cambridge went ahead both times in the game but through the use of star man Owen Thom, Brentwood’s player coach, the hosts levelled the scores.

The first Brentwood goal was created by what can only be described as some brilliant individual play, Thom running through midfield to fire home.

The Brentwood team seemed to pick up his state of mind, because even though the result was not ideal, the team’s attitude was definitely the best of the season.

Another breakaway goal from City made for a very open match, but it was in the last 20 minutes Brentwood switched the run of play in their favour. This was when the second goal was scored — and any national league player would have been more than happy with it was scored.

Striker James Duggan smashed a ball across to the top of the D where Owen Thom slotted with one hand across goal past the keeper.

Teams will struggle against City at their own ground due to some of the underfoot conditions. A heavy blanket of leaves on an already slippery surface makes the pitch quite dangerous. This makes Brentwood’s 2-2 draw all that more important.

Brentwood will have made points on other teams in their league who are not as capable to get a result at all, so are still happy with the result despite it being a draw.

Next week they will be back at their home pitch (Brentwood School), playing St Neots. Brentwood will take positives out of the city game and build on them in this one. Supporters are welcome at Brentwood school for a 2pm start to what should be a very good game to watch.
