GOALS from Dannielle Robertson and Carla Rose helped Brentwood Town Ladies to ease four points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Old Actonians.

Blues built on their clean sheet in a goalless draw at Cambridge Women a week earlier to record their first win in the third tier of English football and bolster their hopes of survival, with the club now knowing either a win over Enfield Town or at least a draw away to Old Actonians will be enough to secure their position for 2012/3.

Town even bounced back from the disappointment of Sophie Lovell missing a 41st-minute penalty by taking the lead on the stroke of half-time through Robertson, and Rose’s delightful free-kick 18 minutes from the end made the victory more comfortable in treacherous conditions.

Robertson’s 20th-minute shot was indicative of the conditions as it beat goalkeeper Robyn Tillyer, only to get caught in the muddy goalmouth and lose pace as well as rolling off course, allowing Suzana Keeka to clear.

Shortly afterwards came Old Actonians’ only real opening of the match as Layla Prior made a sprawling save to push Carla Williams’ strike away from goal.

In doing so, she shoved the ball into the path of Suze Wylie on the rebound, and her chip appeared set to float in before Sophie Lovell got back on the line to head to safety.

Four minutes before half-time, Brentwood were handed a guilt-edged chance to take the lead as Carla Rose was tugged back in the area and the referee awarded a penalty.

It was Town’s first spot-kick of the season, and the usually reliable Lovell chipped fractionally wide from 12 yards.

Tillyer made a superb fingertip save to divert Robertson’s driven shot into the side-netting two minutes later, and it seemed as though the two sides would go in level.

However, in the last minute of the half, Danielle Kite found Robertson with a short pass and the forward arrowed the ball clinically into the net for her eighth goal of the season to give Blues a deserved lead.

Brentwood had to wait until the 72nd minute to extend their advantage when Rose was tripped just outside the penalty area.

The skipper brushed herself down to curl an exquisite free-kick into the top right-hand corner of the net and make it 2-0 and, despite Nikita Whinnett, Kite and Rose with another free-kick going close in the final ten minutes, Blues were able to celebrate a comfortable success.
