First victory for Brentwood

BRENTWOOD went into this game with one point from a possible six looking for a result against a club with maximum points from their first two games in the league this season.

In the end, two well-taken goals from Neil Cousins and Sherwin Stanley gave Brentwood a well-earned win.

Blues made all the running early on and dominated the chances in the first half, with Steve Butterworth creating a number of opportunities and Greg Cohen and Alex Read also testing Cheshunt keeper Glynn Williams.

In fact, the first half man-of-the-match was probably a draw between Butterworth and Williams, but the score at the break was goalless.

The second half started brightly for Town, but gradually Cheshunt came more into the game and Blues keeper Justham demonstrated he, too, was very much on form.

Blues continued to threaten more than the away side, but the game had all the hallmarks of an upset as Cheshunt looked dangerous. Late on, with five minutes to go, the home side made a deserved breakthrough and it was a fine footballing move.

The ball was played down the left flank as Town threw everything forward and Dafter played a clever ball wide to Stanley who crossed in low and hard and just outside Williams’ reach for substitute Cousins to side-foot into an open net.

In time added on, the ball was played down the right flank and this time it was Cohen who played in Stanley with his back to goal and he spun and fired the ball past Williams to double the home side’s lead and effectively kill the game off.

This was an entertaining game, showcasing two of the better goalkeepers in the division with two very well taken goals for the home side.
