FIRST DIVISION KNOCK OUT CUP
Billericay Sports C favoured a more attacking line up and left ace defender and captain Brian Wellman on the substitutes bench with Mike Johnston, Mick Joslin and Brian Warren facing Colin Clements, Alby Warner and Trevor Ward.
The match began in good style for Sports C with Joslin/Warren taking the first doubles over Warner/Ward, the home pairing having to come from behind to force the game into a fifth end which they took 11/9, 7/11, 10/12, 11/6, 11/9.
Johnston then put his side two games up with a convincing three end win over Clements. Warren and Warner then had a tense five end struggle which went to the visitor 7/11, 11/7, 12/14, 11/8, 5/11. Ward then pulled BAE level with a three end win over Joslin and Ward then partnered Clements in the middle doubles against Johnston and Warren with the result going to the visitors to put them ahead for the first time.
Johnston then defeated Warner in another five end encounter. Taking the first two ends he allowed Warner back into the tie but narrowly held on for a win in the fifth end to take the match score to 3-3.
The stage was then set for a possible surprise result but BAE had other ideas and despite going 6-1 down in the first leg Clements battled back to a three end win over Joslin followed by a winning tie for Ward over Warren which saw BAE Selex B complete a winning double - divisional champions and knock out cup winners.
SECOND DIVISION KNOCK OUT CUP
Hutton C Selo found the division's runners up a shade too strong in their cup final and were on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline.
Richard Hayhoe, Wally Sale and Mike Newman faced Martin Winter, Greg Cooper and Tim Mercer with the only success for Hutton coming in the tie between Hayhoe and Winter, Hayhoe just edging out Winter in the fifth end at deuce - 12/14, 12/10, 7/11, 11/8, 12/10.
This win pulled Hutton level as Brentwood Hard had won the first doubles in four ends. The match then fell away from Hutton after Hayhoe's victory as Newman and Sale lost their singles to Cooper and Mercer and with the doubles going to a Winter/Mercer combination over Hayhoe/Newman, the tennis club were in control and needed one win from the next four games which came with a win for Cooper over Hayhoe in four ends.
The end of a successful season for the tennis club as they took the league runners up spot.
